U.S. iPhone buyers like plus-sized models

A survey of U.S. iPhone buyers found an increasing preference toward the higher-margin, big-screen iPhone 6 Plus in December-quarter purchases, which could give Apple (AAPL) earnings a boost. The 5.5-inch screen iPhone 6 Plus accounted for “a whopping 30% of total iPhone units” sold in the U.S. last quarter, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. UBS had estimated the iPhone 6 Plus would make up 20% of U.S. sales and do even better in international markets. The ratio of iPhone 6 to iPhone 6 Plus sales is now 1.5 to 1, compared with 2.5 to 1 in a September-October survey, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said in a research report Thursday. The iPhone 6 accounted for 45% of December quarter sales in the U.S., CIRP said. Older model iPhone 5 series phones made up the remainder.
