While IAC grows online dating business, comics crack wise

Online dating has become a big business for companies like IAC (IACI), which owns Match.com, OkCupid and other hook-up services. As the segment has grown in prominence, so too has ridicule of online matchmaking services by comedians. Late Friday, Business Insider reported that IAC was close to acquiring HowAboutWe, a New York-based startup for singles. Meanwhile, IAC’s majority-owned Tinder dating app is making headlines in Brazil, where people are using it to make romantic connections during the World Cup. Quartz reported last week that Tinder had seen a 50% increase in downloads and usage in Brazil since the soccer tournament began in mid-June. While online dating is increasingly commonplace, comedians like to poke fun at the superficiality of some services and how narrow others are.
