Apple Watch software update, but no sales data, seen at WWDC

Apple (AAPL) is expected to update the software development kit for its Apple Watch next week at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference. But it’s not expected to quantify smartwatch sales to date, leaving analysts to shoot in the dark. Apple’s WWDC runs June 8-12 in San Francisco. The Apple Watch SDK will allow developers to write native apps for the device and have access to its many sensors. Current Apple Watch apps don’t run on the watch itself, but instead run on a connected iPhone that projects app information to the wrist device. The switch to native apps should translate to faster, more capable watch apps. The first third-party native apps likely will be available this fall.

Cosmetics and personal-care products outperformed the market in the first five months of 2015. While the Nasdaq and S&P 500 rose 7% and 2%, respectively, through May, the personal-care group checked in with an 8% gain. This isn’t too surprising in light of industry data. The Commerce Department reported that the personal-care and health segment in April rose 5.3% on a year-ago basis vs. only 0.9% overall for U.S. retail and food service sales.
