Apple rival Xiaomi begins global smartphone rollout

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, often called an Apple (AAPL) copycat, is expanding outside of Asia. Xiaomi, pronounced she-yow-me, started selling smartphones in Brazil on Wednesday. It is offering its Redmi 2 for about $160, which is up to half the price of comparable smartphones from rivals such as Lenovo and Samsung, the Financial Times reported. Xiaomi sees Brazil as a stepping stone into Latin America. In Asia, Xiaomi sells smartphones in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, India and Indonesia. Also Thursday, Xiaomi revealed disappointing smartphone sales for the first half of 2015. It sold 34.7 million smartphones in the first six months of the year, up 33% year over year. Apple Watch interest sinks as iPhone demand stays strong

While iPhone sales remain strong, Apple Watch sales look limp. Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves on Wednesday raised his Apple iPhone sales estimates, but trimmed his targets for the Apple Watch. Hargreaves has a sector weight rating on Apple stock, with a 12-month fair value of 139. Apple stock was up a fraction, near 126, in afternoon trading on the stock market today. Apple stock touched its all-time high above 134 on April 28. “Anecdotal evidence suggests Apple (AAPL) Watch demand is slowing quickly,” Hargreaves said in a research note. “This dovetails with recent supply checks, which suggested a reduction in component order volume.” As a result, Hargreaves cut his Apple Watch unit sales estimate for fiscal 2015 ending Sept. 26 to 10.5 million from 11 million. He trimmed his fiscal 2016 Apple Watch unit estimate to 21 million from 24 million. Meanwhile, the iPhone is poised to make …

Apple (AAPL) launched its bid to stay relevant in the music industry on Tuesday with the debut of Apple Music, a streaming music service built on its acquisition last year of Beats. Apple made the subscription service available to its millions of mobile device users through an update to the iOS 8 operating system about 11 a.m. EDT. Apple Music features an on-demand streaming music catalog of over 30 million tracks, playlists curated by experts, a ive global radio station called Beats 1, and a social network linking fans and artists called Connect. The service costs $9.99 a month after a three-month trial period. A family plan supporting up to six listeners costs $14.99 a month. Apple created Apple Music to protect its iTunes franchise, which has been eroded by the popularity of streaming music services like Spotify and Internet radio services such as Pandora Media (P). When Apple unveiled…
