Apple shores up music industry clout with streaming service

Apple (AAPL) launched its bid to stay relevant in the music industry on Tuesday with the debut of Apple Music, a streaming music service built on its acquisition last year of Beats. Apple made the subscription service available to its millions of mobile device users through an update to the iOS 8 operating system about 11 a.m. EDT. Apple Music features an on-demand streaming music catalog of over 30 million tracks, playlists curated by experts, a ive global radio station called Beats 1, and a social network linking fans and artists called Connect. The service costs $9.99 a month after a three-month trial period. A family plan supporting up to six listeners costs $14.99 a month. Apple created Apple Music to protect its iTunes franchise, which has been eroded by the popularity of streaming music services like Spotify and Internet radio services such as Pandora Media (P).
