Microsoft’s Windows 8 finally surpasses XP in usage

More than 2 years after its release, Microsoft’s (MSFT) unloved Windows 8 operating system finally has surpassed the now 13-year-old Windows XP in usage worldwide. Windows 8, including version 8.1, had 18.7% market share in November, based on PCs in use on the Internet, according to Net Applications. That’s up from 16.8% in October. Released in October 2012, Windows 8 is now the second most popular PC operating system after Windows 7. Windows XP fell to third place in November, with 13.6% market share, down from 17.2% in October. Microsoft (MSFT) released Windows XP in October 2001. Windows 7 continued its reign as the top PC operating system, with 53.7% market share in November, up from 53.1% in October. Microsoft released Windows 7 in October 2009.
