Microsoft spins Bill Gates demotion as a ‘step up’

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is stepping down as chairman, but don’t call it a demotion. Microsoft is calling the job change a “step up” for the tech industry icon. Microsoft’s press release on the appointment of new CEO Satya Nadella and new Chairman John Thompson says Gates “will assume a new role on the Board as Founder and Technology Advisor.” It doesn’t say Gates stepped down as chairman. Instead, it describes Gates as “previously Chairman of the Board of Directors.” Some in the investment community had called for the removal of Gates as chairman to clear the way for major changes at Microsoft (MSFT). Gates “will devote more time to the company, supporting Nadella in shaping technology and product direction,” the press release says.
