Microsoft narrows CEO hunt to 20 candidates

Microsoft’s search for a new chief executive to replace retiring CEO Steve Ballmer won’t be finished until early next year, the company announced Tuesday. Board member John Thompson, chairman of the search committee, updated investors on the CEO hunt in a blog post. He said the committee is focused intensely on about 20 candidates. It narrowed the list of candidates after talking with “several dozen” people across different industries. “We’re moving ahead well, and I expect we’ll complete our work in the early part of 2014,” Thompson said.” Microsoft (MSFT) has had only two CEOs in its 38-year history. As a board, we are determined and confident that the company’s third CEO will lead Microsoft to renewed and continued success.” Ballmer, who replaced co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates in 2000, announced on Aug. 23 that he would retire within 12 months.
