Game over for Xbox One; PS4 seen winning by big margin

For Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox One, it’s game over in the console war. Sony’s PlayStation 4 is going to win the current generation of video game consoles by a wide margin, says research firm Strategy Analytics. In 2019, there will be 40% more Sony (SNE) PS4s in use than Xbox Ones, Strategy Analytics forecast in a report out Wednesday. The global active installed base of Sony’s PS4 is predicted to reach 80 million units by 2019, compared with 57 million for Microsoft’s Xbox One, the research firm said. “Both consoles will be near the peak of their life cycle at that time, although there will be room for further modest growth,” analyst David Mercer said in a blog post. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s (NTDOY) Wii U is destined to remain a distant third in the console business, with a projected installed base of 15.2 million units.
