Sony counters Xbox One sales lead report with new PS4 data

Sony (SNE) announced Tuesday that it has sold more than 2.1 million PlayStation 4 video game consoles to date. The revelation came after one research firm said Microsoft’s  (MSFT) new, higher-priced Xbox One console outsold it on Black Friday. Sony’s PS4 launched in North America on Nov. 15 and sold 1 million units within the first 24 hours of availability. It expanded the launch to Europe and Latin America on Friday. Microsoft has not yet updated its Xbox One sales figures. After its Nov. 22 launch in 13 countries, including the U.S., Microsoft said it sold more than 1 million Xbox One units in the first 24 hours, matching Sony’s North American PS4 launch total. Sony’s PS4 costs $399 and Microsoft’s Xbox One costs $499. Both consoles have had reports of technical problems affecting a small percentage of units.
