Disney casts spell on Apple, Google for video playback

Like the happy ending to a fairy tale, Walt Disney Co. (DIS) has gotten rivals Apple and Google to play nicely together. Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOGL) have agreed to play Disney movies purchased from either of their online stores on each other’s devices. For example, someone can now buy “Frozen” from the Google Play download store, then play the movie on an Apple iPad or iPhone, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The agreement took effect Tuesday and covers movies that people register with the Disney Movies Anywhere app. Previously, movies and TV shows purchased from the Apple iTunes store were limited to playback on Apple’s iOS devices, as well as Mac and Windows computers. Google had similar restrictions for its Google Play store and Android devices.
