Digital news startups over the last few years have added almost 5,000 full-time professional jobs, at a time when traditional news outlets like newspapers have been laying off reporters and editors, a new report says. The new journalism ventures represent a small but important increase in reporting power, according to Pew Research Center’s annual State of the News Media report, released Wednesday. “New players are boosting reporting power, technological talent and financial resources going into news, creating a level of energy not felt for a long time,” Amy Mitchell, Pew Research Center’s director of journalism research, said in a statement. “The momentum is real, but it remains to be seen whether these new ventures will flourish and extend to the variety of ways in which the public consumes news and information.” Scalper1 News
