Apple’s plans for Beats could include smart headphones

Apple (AAPL) might be looking to add some smarts to headphones from Beats Electronics. A new specification for accessories manufacturers in Apple’s Made-For-iPhone/iPad/iPod (MFi) program will let them make headphones that connect to iOS devices using a Lightning connector instead of the usual headphone jack, 9to5Mac and others reported this week. Lightning headphones could deliver higher-quality audio and take advantage of Apple (AAPL) headphone remote controls such as volume and launching specific apps like iTunes Radio or Beats Music, 9to5Mac said. The new capabilities aren’t available yet, but Apple could initiate them with a software update in the near future. The company’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 8, is due out this fall. Apple announced its plans to purchase Beats Electronics and subscription streaming music service Beats Music on May 28, following several weeks of speculation.
