Apple, Samsung lose ground in tablet market

Apple (AAPL) and Samsung, the top two makers of tablet computers, lost market share in the second quarter as smaller rivals like Lenovo and LG Electronics gained share, market research firm IDC reported Wednesday. Worldwide shipments of tablets fell 7% year over year to 44.7 million units in Q2. But market leader Apple saw its shipments drop 17.9% and No. 2 Samsung notched a 12% decline, IDC said. Apple’s tablet market share slid to 24.5% in Q2 from 27.7% in the same quarter last year. Samsung’s tablet share dipped to 17% from 18%. China-based Lenovo came in No. 3 with 5.7% market share, up from 4.9%. Its tablet shipments rose 6.8% in Q2. China’s Huawei and South Korea’s LG Electronics recorded a statistical tie for fourth place. Huawei’s tablet shipments rose 103.6%, while LG’s rose 246.4%.
