Amazon Prime memberships poised to tumble with price hike

If Amazon.com (AMZN) goes ahead with a price increase on its Prime service, the e-commerce leader could see the number of Prime members take a dive. A survey of Amazon customers by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners showed a resistance to paying higher prices for Prime. Amazon now charges $79 a year for the service, which includes free two-day shipping on millions of items and unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows. After posting disappointing fourth-quarter results on Jan. 30, Amazon said it’s considering raising the price for the popular service by $20 to $40 a year. But the CIRP survey commissioned by UBS found Amazon has a “tough road” ahead if it wants to up the price of Prime.
