3D selfies could give consumer 3D printing a lift

Selfies are going 3D. The trend of people taking self portraits with their smartphone cameras is spilling over into consumer 3D printing. Amazon.com (AMZN]) announced Monday that it is offering 3D printing services, including the ability for customers to make personalized bobble-head toys. The full-color cartoon bobble heads are 2.8 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide and deep. They cost $29.99 and are produced by Mixee Labs of Brooklyn, N.Y. People configure their bobble heads using an online tool much like they would create a 2D Mii figure for a Nintendo (NTDOY) video game. They select hair, eyes, glasses, skin tones, etc. The custom bobble-head dolls are among more than 200 print-on-demand products Amazon is making available from a new online store.
