Microsoft, Amazon, Google Cloud Growth Lifts Fiber-Optics Firms

You might think the race to the cloud mostly benefits leading cloud services providers, such as  Microsoft ( MSFT ),  Amazon.com ( AMZN ) and  Alphabet ‘s ( GOOGL ) Google. Of all the electronics, communications and digitally inspired IBD industry groups, the Telecom-Fiber Optics industry group ranks the highest. It’s No. 6, up from No. 9 a month ago, No. 95 two months ago and No. 168 three months ago. What’s different from a few months ago? On March 9, Microsoft Azure Chief Technology Officer Mark Russinovich told the Open Compute Project summit that Microsoft will grow from 22 to 28 data centers in 2016. Azure is Microsoft’s cloud business. Also, Google announced March 22 that it would add 12 new data center regions globally by the end of 2017, including two in the U.S., nearly doubling its existing 14 regions. And cloud leader Amazon Web Services, a rising business of Amazon.com, will grow from 12 regional clouds to 17 “in the coming year,” CEO Jeff Bezos said April 6 in his annual letter to shareholders. Fiber-optic developers that create the high-speed lines and connections for data centers will be among those companies benefiting from this expansion. “The first two new data centers (Oregon and Tokyo) will come online later this year, with the others to be launched in 2017,” said Jefferies analyst George Notter, regarding the Google announcement, in a March research note. “Based on our conversations with industry contacts, we think the additional investments are great news for Infinera ( INFN ), Ciena ( CIEN ), and to a much lesser extent, Alcatel-Lucent.” He cited the three as Google’s vendors for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM, an optics technology) and Infinera’s Cloud Xpress as Google’s preferred metro data center interconnect (DCI) platform, “although we wouldn’t be surprised if they (Google) eventually operationalized other vendors as well.” Infinera Down After Analyst Calls Stock ‘Way Too Cheap’ At the time, March 24, Infinera was trading near 15 — “way too cheap,” Notter said. He reiterated Infinera’s buy rating with a 22.50 price target. Since then Infinera stock has fallen, after tumbling 2.7% Tuesday to 14.58, 42% off a nine-year high of 25.24 touched Aug. 18. But it was a tough day for the sector overall. Rival Ciena, however, fell 3% Tuesday, to 17.27, 33% off a 16-month high 25.77 touched July 23. Heading toward its first-quarter earnings release April 27 after the market close, Infinera is expected to report continuing choppy earnings growth on slower sales growth. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect earnings up 6% to 17 cents per share minus items, on sales up 31% to $246 million. While earnings are expected to top the year-earlier 16 cents per share, it’s a tough comparison to the Q1 2015’s 433% EPS growth. With a market cap of $2.06 billion, Infinera is the second-largest company in the IBD fiber group, following Ciena’s $2.4 billion, but neither is among the healthiest. Ciena carries an IBD Composite Rating of 72, and Infinera has a 67. The healthiest, both with CRs of 97, are Lumentum Holdings ( LITE ) with $1.45 billion in market value, and little Clearfield ( CLFD ), with a $222 million market cap. The third- and fourth-largest among these small caps both carry 87 CRs: Finisar ( FNSR ) with $1.8 billion in market value, and Viavi Solutions ( VIAV ) with a $1.5 billion market cap. Finisar fell 2.9% Tuesday, and Viavi slipped 1.1%. Image provded by Shutterstock .

Finisar Stock Jumps, With Q3 Profit Beating As China Demand Grows

Shares of  Finisar ( FNSR ), a supplier of fiber optic networking devices to Google and Verizon Communications, jumped to a seven-month high after the company posted fiscal-third-quarter earnings late Thursday that topped views and forecast current-quarter revenue above the consensus estimate. A pick-up in demand for fiber optic devices from China could boost Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Finisar, analysts say. China Mobile ( CHL ) and other wireless firms are building out new networks. And China’s ZTE — the mobile gear maker which was the object of a U.S. government export ban this week for its sales to Iran — is not a “material” customer of Finisar, analysts say. Verizon ( VZ ), meanwhile, is among the U.S. telecom companies upgrading landline fiber optic networks in metropolitan areas to 100-gigabit-per-second technology. “Finisar reported solid fiscal Q3 results, with EPS coming in above Street expectations, and the company guided (current-quarter) revenue and EPS ahead of consensus estimates,” said Troy Jensen, a Piper Jaffray analyst, in a research report. “The upbeat fiscal Q3 results and forward guidance were driven by robust demand for 100G telco and datacom optics.” Finisar stock was up 18% in morning trading in the stock market today , near 17, as other fiber optic stocks also gained. Lumentum Holdings ( LITE ) advanced 1.5%, while Oclaro ( OCLR ), Viavi Solutions ( VIAV ) and Applied Optoelectronics ( AAOI ) were all higher by more than 1.5%. And while disappointing results at Ciena ( CIEN ) last week had led to sharp sell-off in fiber optic stocks, Ciena stock was up nearly 3% Friday morning. IBD’s Telecom-Fiber Optics group as a whole rose more than 3%. It ranks No. 81 out of 197 industry groups tracked. While phone companies such as Verizon have been the biggest customers of the fiber optic parts makers,  Internet companies such as Alphabet ’s ( GOOGL ) Google, Amazon.com ( AMZN ) and Facebook ( FB ) are also boosting demand as they build new data centers . In its fiscal Q3 ended Jan. 31, Finisar said it earned 25 cents per share minus items, flat from the year-earlier period but topping analysts estimates of 22 cents. For the current quarter ending in April, Finisar forecasts profit  of  22 cents to 28 cents, where analysts had modeled 21 cents. Finisar, which has a relatively weak IBD Composite rating of 45, said Q3 revenue rose 1% to $309.2 million, missing consensus estimates of $311 million. But for the current quarter, Finisar forecasts revenue of $317 million at the midpoint of its range, above the $315 million modeled by analysts. Merger talks between Finisar and Lumentum broke off last year, analysts said. Intensified competition has pressured the profit margins of fiber optic parts makers. “Finisar is seeing growth on a number of fronts; however, the increasingly competitive 100G datacom market holds us back for now,” said Jefferies analyst James Kisner, in a report. He has a neutral rating on Finisar stock. Image provided by Shutterstock .

Marvell Catches Activist Starboard Investment; Upgraded To Buy

Beleaguered Marvell Technology Group ( MRVL ) stock pocketed a major upgrade Monday on activist investor Starboard Value’s nearly 7% stake in the Bermuda-based chipmaker. Marvell stock flew almost 7% on Feb. 3, the day Starboard’s investment was announced. Starboard has built its investment since December, B. Riley analyst Craig Ellis wrote in a research report. Ellis upgraded Marvell stock to buy from a sell rating. Yet, in the stock market today , shares were down 1.5%, trading near 8.80. Starboard’s 6.7% stake in Marvell “casts significant doubt on our ‘sell’ rating which was predicated on financial inquiry completion risks and post-review financial execution concerns,” Ellis wrote. In October, Marvell revealed an accounting error may have shifted 7%-8% of sales to Q2, rather than Q3. Marvell’s PricewaterhouseCoopers auditor resigned amid the probe. The resulting internal investigation questioned senior management’s operating style. The SEC and U.S. Attorney’s Office joined the investigation in December. Marvell noted it’s “common for governmental agencies to open investigations in these circumstances.” Starboard’s investment isn’t a panacea, but could come with several Marvell board seats, “a tier-1 auditor and marque CFO,” Ellis wrote. Starboard also was an investor in TriQuint before it became Apple ( AAPL ) supplier  Qorvo ( QRVO ) and Integrated Device Technology ( IDTI ). “We believe (Starboard) knows semiconductors well, with a record of agitating for increased shareholder interest,” he wrote. Starboard consultants include Tessera Technologies ( TSRA ) Chairman Rick Hill, Viavi Solutions ( VIAV ) CEO Oleg Khaykin and former Integrated Devices interim CEO Jeff McCreary. It’s also possible Starboard could help Marvell wrangle R&D capabilities, Ellis wrote. “Past checks show undisciplined and at times ineffectual field sales and engineering,” he wrote. At least two analysts rate Marvell stock a sell, and 21 others rate the stock as a hold. Ellis is among at least five analysts to rate Marvell stock a buy. Ellis boosted his price target on Marvell stock to 12 from 7.
