Microsoft admits Xbox One is in 2nd place behind PS4

Microsoft(MSFT) and Sony (SNE) have been waging a back-and-forth public relations battle to establish which company’s new video game console is more popular this holiday shopping season. With its latest press release, Microsoft basically admitted that it is not selling as many new consoles as Sony (SNE), but blamed production issues, not consumer demand. Microsoft (MSFT) announced Wednesday that it has sold more than 2 million Xbox One consoles to consumers in its first 18 days of availability. “Demand is exceeding supply in our 13 launch markets and Xbox One is sold out at most retailers,” Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft corporate vice president of strategy and marketing for Xbox, said in a statement . The Microsoft press release included quotes from executives at retailers Amazon.com (AMZN), GameStop (GME) and Wal-Mart (WMT) supporting its claim that the Xbox One is a hot-selling product. On Dec. 3, Sony announced that it had sold more than 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the product’s first 16 days of availability. Like the Xbox One, the PS4 also is in short supply this holiday season. Sony launched its PS4 on Nov. 15 and Microsoft followed with the Xbox One a week

Sony counters Xbox One sales lead report with new PS4 data

Sony (SNE) announced Tuesday that it has sold more than 2.1 million PlayStation 4 video game consoles to date. The revelation came after one research firm said Microsoft’s  (MSFT) new, higher-priced Xbox One console outsold it on Black Friday. Sony’s PS4 launched in North America on Nov. 15 and sold 1 million units within the first 24 hours of availability. It expanded the launch to Europe and Latin America on Friday. Microsoft has not yet updated its Xbox One sales figures. After its Nov. 22 launch in 13 countries, including the U.S., Microsoft said it sold more than 1 million Xbox One units in the first 24 hours, matching Sony’s North American PS4 launch total. Sony’s PS4 costs $399 and Microsoft’s Xbox One costs $499. Both consoles have had reports of technical problems affecting a small percentage of units. Andrew House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, called the 2.1 million…

Old consoles dominating holiday video game sales

Despite the arrival of next-generation video game consoles from Microsoft and Sony, games for older consoles dominated the sales charts during the opening weekend of holiday shopping. All of the top 20 best-selling game titles on Amazon.com (AMZN) over the weekend were for prior-generation consoles. Microsoft ‘s (MSFT) Xbox 360 scored 10 of the top 20, while Sony ‘s (SNE) PlayStation 3 claimed eight and Nintendo ‘s (NTDOY) Wii nabbed two, Cowen analyst Doug Creutz said in a research note Monday. The latest game consoles — Microsoft’s Xbox One, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U — didn’t have a single game in the top 20. That’s not too surprising for the Xbox One and PS4, given reports of shortages of the new machines, which debuted last month. But the Wii U has been out for a year and a high-profile game, “Super Mario 3D World,” came out on Nov. 22. “We expect Nintendo’s latest console to continue to struggle this holiday,” Creutz wrote. Among third-party publishers, Electronic Arts (EA) had six of the top 20 games, followed by Ubisoft with four. Activision (ATVI) and Time Warner ‘s (TWX) Warner Bros. each had three in the top 20. Activision’s “Call of Duty: Ghosts” for the Xbox 360 was the best-selling game overall, followed by…
