Ultra HD video surge coming to fuel 4K TV upgrade cycle

LAS VEGAS — For ultrahigh-definition television to really take off, the industry is going to need a lot of exciting UHD or 4K content that takes advantage of what the super-sharp new displays can show. But fear not, Hollywood studios and content distributors say more 4K movies and TV shows are on the way, including Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs likely by the end of the year. Netflix deal with Dish opens door for more pay TV agreements

Netflix’s (NFLX) deal with Dish Network sets the stage for similar deals with other multichannel video distributors in the U.S., Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Youssef Squali says. Dish Network (DISH) on Wednesday became the first major U.S. pay TV provider to integrate Netflix’s streaming video service into its set-top box. The Netflix app is available on Dish’s second-generation Hopper whole-home digital video recorder. Dish said the deal is a win for consumers. “Pairing Netflix with Hopper represents the consolidation of two incredible video experiences,” Vivek Khemka, Dish senior vice president of product management, said in a statement. “This app integration eliminates the need to switch television inputs to access content on varying devices.
