PC shipments climb out of two-year hole

The official end of life for Microsoft ‘s (MSFT) Windows XP operating system on April 8 continued to boost personal computer sales in the second quarter, market research firms Gartner and IDC reported late Wednesday. After eight quarters of decline, worldwide PC shipments were up a scant 0.1% year over year in the second quarter to 75.8 million units, Gartner said. Rival research firm IDC, which measures the market slightly differently, said that global PC shipments fell 1.7% year over year to 74.4 million units in Q2, but that’s much better than its projected decline of 7.1%. In the U.S., PC shipments rose 7%. Gartner put the increase at 7.4% and IDC at 6.9%. Four of the top five vendors in the U.S. saw double-digit growth — Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba. Microsoft to end free Windows 7 support in six months

Microsoft got a nice lift in sales when it ended support for Windows XP. Now, the software giant is warning about the end of support for its Windows 7 operating system. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft (MSFT) has announced that it is ending free mainstream support for all versions of Windows 7 on Jan. 13, 2015. After that time, users will need to pay for extended support to get bug fixes and feature updates. Microsoft is, however, promising to offer security updates for Windows 7 until Jan. 14, 2020, when the operating system hits its scheduled end of life. Windows 7 debuted on Oct. 22, 2009, and replaced the unliked Windows Vista. Windows 7 is the most popular PC operating system in use, running nearly 51% of the world’s personal computers as of June, according to the Net Applications consulting service.
