Mexico Key In AT&T, Telefonica Latin America Deal?

How good a deal AT&T (T) will get if it sells satellite broadcaster DirecTV’s Latin American pay-TV business for $10 billion depends in part on whether its assets in Mexico are included, says a BTIG analyst. Spain-based Telefonica (TEF), one on Latin America’s biggest wireless phone companies along with America Movil (AMX), could buy DirecTV’s business in the region for about $10 billion, Reuters reported on Friday. AT&T acquired DirecTV in July.

Macquarie Securities downgraded American Movil, which faces intensified competition in Mexico from AT&T (T) as growth slows in Brazil and at its U.S. subsidiary, TracFone. Kevin Smithen, an analyst at Macquarie, said in a research note that America Movil’s (AMX) plans to expand in Europe seem at a dead end. Regulatory pressure on American Movil (AMX) in its home market, Mexico, is still building amid AT&T’s (T) entry into the market, says RBC Capital. “Mexican regulatory pressure (has) still to play out,” said Jonathan Dann, an RBC Capital analyst, in a research report.
