Sorry, cheapskates, Apple iPhones to remain pricey

Apple (AAPL) is likely to stick with its premium pricing strategy for future iPhones, market research firm IDC said Wednesday. Apple also should see the average selling price of its iPhones remain relatively stable for the next five years, IDC forecast. This year, the worldwide average selling price for an Apple iPhone will be about $649, compared with $247 for a Google (GOOG) Android-based smartphone, IDC said. Over the next five years, the verage selling price of an iPhone is projected to decline at a compound annual rate of 1.2% to $610 in 2018, the researcher says. Summer launch possible for Apple iPhone 6 smartphone

Apple’s (AAPL) next-generation iPhone could be out as soon as July, based on supply chain checks, said Mizuho Securities analyst Abhey Lamba in a research report Wednesday. If true, the summer launch would break Apple’s recent pattern of releasing smartphones in the fall. “Our checks in Asia and Japan indicate that while the final plans could move around, an early launch of the next-generation iPhone is a possibility,” Lamba said. “Supply chain vendors are getting ready for an earlier ramp-up of production vs. prior years. “Recently, the company has been introducing (its) new lineup in (the) September time frame whereas the next-generation phones could come out in July this year.
