For Apple, money in Office for iPad in tablet sales

Apple (AAPL) does have the potential to make some coin from Microsoft’s (MSFT) new Office for iPad, contrary to an analyst report Thursday. But whether those software sales will be significant is an open question. Most agree the real benefit to Apple is in more tablet sales. Microsoft (MSFT) introduced Office apps for Apple ‘s (AAPL) iPad tablets at an event Thursday in San Francisco. The apps, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, will be available under a “freemium” business model. The apps will be free to download and use for reading and presenting documents, but people will need a subscription to Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud computing service to create and edit documents. In a report Thursday, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said he suspected that Apple wouldn’t benefit from Office for iPad software sales because it is a subscription service like Netflix (NFLX) or Pandora (P). Apple, however, confirmed late Thursday that Office 365 is being offered as an in-app purchase to users of the free Office apps. If users purchase Office 365 in that manner, Apple would get its standard 30% share of the sale through its App Store.

Apple won’t get squat from Office for iPad sales, UBS says

Apple (AAPL) is unlikely to take its usual 30% cut of App Store sales when it comes to Microsoft’s (MSFT) new Office for iPad apps. While the iPad Office apps are available for free download, you can create and edit documents only if you’re a paying subscriber.” As in the case of other subscription-based apps like Netflix (NFLX) and Pandora (P), we do not expect Apple to take a cut from Microsoft,” UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said in a report Thursday. “Apple’s iWork suite had already been made free last fall, so we don’t see any associated negatives with the deal. “Asked whether Apple will get a 30% fee, a Microsoft spokesperson said, “Microsoft is already a developer on Apple across several products sold through the iOS store, including Home Premium as launched on iPhone last year. Beyond that we don’t share specific financials of our partnerships.” Microsoft CEO Satya…

Microsoft debuts Office for iPad, no longer ‘holding back’

Seven weeks into his tenure as Microsoft ‘s (MSFT) new CEO, Satya Nadella on Thursday showed there’s a new sheriff in town by introducing a version of Microsoft’s Office productivity software for Apple’s (AAPL) iPad tablets.  He also pledged to make Office available to consumers and professionals on a host of mobile devices. Microsoft is “absolutely committed” to making its applications run great cross-platform, Nadella said. “There’s no holding back of anything. It’s about being able to excel everywhere our customers are,” he said. It’s a strategic change for Microsoft, which previously reserved its Office software for its own mobile devices as a way to differentiate them from rival products. But with its Surface tablets badly trailing Apple and competitors using Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system in the tablet market, Microsoft changed course. Nadella outlined the company’s “mobile first, cloud first” strategy during his first public appearance as CEO…
