Microsoft’s new Surface tablet pitched as laptop replacement

It used to be said that Microsoft (MSFT) needed three tries to get a product right. The software giant is hoping that’s the case with its third-generation Surface tablet. Microsoft on Tuesday introduced its Surface Pro 3 tablet, which it claims will be the product that replaces the notebook computer. It also hopes the device will give it an edge against Apple’s (AAPL) iPad and Google (GOOGL) Android-based tablets. Like its predecessors, the Surface Pro 3 can double as a tablet and a notebook. It features a greatly improved dockable keyboard and adjustable screen kickstand that will allow for laptop typing, something difficult with earlier models. Plus, it features a special pen for writing digital ink on documents, editing photos and other tasks where pen input is preferable. It has a 12-inch screen where the previous model had a 10.6-inch display. The new screen is 38% bigger than Surface…

Samsung tops Apple in smartphone user satisfaction

For the first time, Samsung has surpassed Apple in smartphone customer satisfaction, the American Customer Satisfaction Index reported Tuesday. Apple (AAPL) still sells nearly twice as many smartphones in the U.S. as Samsung, its closest competitor, but customers aren’t as thrilled with their iPhones as they used to be. Samsung’s smartphone customer satisfaction score surged 7% to 81 on a 100-point scale in the latest ACSI survey. It was the first time Apple was not No. 1 in the category. Apple’s score fell for the second year in a row, down 2% to 79. “Samsung has gone from up-and-comer to top-of-the-heap on the strength of its smartphone portfolio,” ACSI Managing Director David VanAmburg said in a statement. “Apple’s magic isn’t gone, but the luster has dulled on its older models. Every iteration improves on the last, but Apple’s year-long product refresh cycle is an eternity when a new…

Samsung’s latest marketing stunt ‘pushes boundaries’

Samsung is No. 1 in smartphone unit sales and No. 1 in shameless advertising and promotion. In February, Samsung handed out Galaxy Note 3 smartphones to athletes at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The South Korean consumer electronics company wanted athletes to use its phones during the opening ceremony and be seen by millions doing so. It asked athletes to cover the logo of any competing phone, such as Apple ‘s (AAPL) iPhone, that they might use during the ceremony. Samsung, a sponsor of the Olympic games, made that a condition for athletes receiving the free Galaxy Note 3 in their gift bags, MacRumors and others reported. In March, it orchestrated the celebrity group photo taken at the Oscars by host Ellen DeGeneres using a Samsung phone. Samsung was a sponsor of this year’s Academy Awards. In April, Samsung angered the White House by getting Red Sox baseball player
