Samsung’s latest marketing stunt ‘pushes boundaries’

Samsung is No. 1 in smartphone unit sales and No. 1 in shameless advertising and promotion. In February, Samsung handed out Galaxy Note 3 smartphones to athletes at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The South Korean consumer electronics company wanted athletes to use its phones during the opening ceremony and be seen by millions doing so. It asked athletes to cover the logo of any competing phone, such as Apple ‘s (AAPL) iPhone, that they might use during the ceremony. Samsung, a sponsor of the Olympic games, made that a condition for athletes receiving the free Galaxy Note 3 in their gift bags, MacRumors and others reported. In March, it orchestrated the celebrity group photo taken at the Oscars by host Ellen DeGeneres using a Samsung phone. Samsung was a sponsor of this year’s Academy Awards.
