Apple-IBM alliance a big setback for BlackBerry

The global partnership of Apple (AAPL) and IBM (IBM) in enterprise mobility scored high marks from Wall Street on Wednesday. But it was another setback for BlackBerry (BBRY). Late Tuesday, Apple and IBM announced an exclusive partnership that will bring IBM’s Big Data and analytics capabilities to Apple’s iPhone and iPad. IBM will create more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions, including native apps, developed from the ground up, for Apple’s iOS mobile devices. IBM also will provide cloud computing service optimized for iOS, including device management, security, analytics and mobile integration. Plus, IBM will provide packaged offerings for device activation, supply and management. And Apple will provide AppleCare support service tailored for enterprise customers. Apple was up 1%, near 96, in afternoon trading in the stock market today. BM stock was up more than 2%, near 193. But BlackBerry stock was down more than 9%, as the one-time enterprise mobility…

Microsoft plans major job cuts after Nokia acquisition

When Satya Nadella became Microsoft’s (MSFT) new chief executive, he inherited the $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s (NOK) mobile phone business from his predecessor Steve Ballmer. Now it’s Nadella’s job to make the deal make financial sense. The first order of business is job cuts, which are expected within a week. On Aug. 23, Ballmer announced his plan to retire once a successor was chosen. On Sept. 3, he announced the company’s intent to buy Nokia’s handset business. The purchase of Nokia’s mobile phone business was seen as Microsoft’s attempt to become more like Apple (AAPL) and control the entire phone development and manufacturing process to improve the experience for consumers. Previously, Microsoft licensed its mobile operating system to handset vendors and hoped for the best. But with Surface tablets and Nokia…

What’s up Apple’s sleeve? The iWatch, analysts say

Apple (AAPL) hasn’t disclosed that it’s making a smartwatch, but analysts are already factoring the so-called iWatch into their financial models. On Tuesday, Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Chris Caso updated his sales and earnings estimates for Apple on the assumption that Apple will come out with a smartwatch-fitness device in the fourth quarter. “Looking into (calendar Q4), we think consensus estimates are quite conservative, since consensus doesn’t appear to reflect the blended (average selling price) increase we’re expecting (for iPhone), nor does consensus appear to reflect any impact from iWatch,” Caso wrote in a research note. Caso raised his price target on Apple stock to 115 from 104 and maintained his positive rating. Apple stock was down 1%, near 96, in midday trading on the stock market today. On Monday, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty raised her price target on Apple stock to…
