First-weekend iPhone 6 sales figures fail to impress

Apple’s first-weekend sales of the iPhone 6 family of smartphones topped 10 million units, roughly in line with analyst expectations. Apple(AAPL) announced Monday that it had sold over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets in the first three days of availability. The eighth-generation iPhones went on sale Friday in the U.S. and nine other geographies. Apple expects to be selling the new phones in 115 countries by the end of the year. “Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. Then Apple CEO Tim Cook joined the band on stage, engaged in some awkward banter with U2 frontman Bono and did a weird high five where the two touched index fingers. After that, they announced that Apple would make U2’s new album, “Songs of Innocence,” available for free to iTunes users. The album will be exclusive to iTunes through Oct. 13. Apple reportedly paid U2 and record label Universal Music Group more than $100 million for the album giveaway and use of the album’s first single…
