Apple Watch to supercharge use of wireless charging

Wireless charging of mobile devices has been slow to take off, but Apple’s (AAPL) upcoming smartwatch could change that. Market research firm IHS (IHS) says global sales of wireless power receivers and transmitters in wearable applications will surge to $481 million in 2015, up from $14.5 million last year. The release this spring of the Apple Watch will spur the market, IHS predicted in a recent report. Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) got several price target hikes Friday after the Apple supplier late Thursday gave strong guidance and posted a Q4 beat. U.S. iPhone buyers like plus-sized models

A survey of U.S. iPhone buyers found an increasing preference toward the higher-margin, big-screen iPhone 6 Plus in December-quarter purchases, which could give Apple (AAPL) earnings a boost. The 5.5-inch screen iPhone 6 Plus accounted for “a whopping 30% of total iPhone units” sold in the U.S. last quarter, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. UBS had estimated the iPhone 6 Plus would make up 20% of U.S. sales and do even better in international markets. The ratio of iPhone 6 to iPhone 6 Plus sales is now 1.5 to 1, compared with 2.5 to 1 in a September-October survey, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said in a research report Thursday.
