Apple targeting old folks to sell more iPads

With tablet sales declining, Apple (AAPL) and IBM (IBM) are hoping to give iPad sales a boost by targeting senior citizens. Tech gadget makers usually focus on the youth market, but iPad maker Apple and enterprise partner IBM see a huge opportunity with the growing elderly population. “As a percentage of global population, the elderly will increase from 11.7% in 2013 to more than 21% by 2050,” Apple said in a press release. “Every day, 10,000 people turn 65, and 40% of seniors live alone or with their spouse only.” Apple, IBM and Japan Post Group on Thursday announced an initiative aimed at improving the quality of life for millions of Japanese senior citizens. Apple stock dinged by Apple Watch production, tech issues

Investors gave Apple (AAPL) a slap on the wrist Thursday for reported problems with its new Apple Watch. Apple stock fell 2.7% to 125.15 on the stock market today. It was the third straight day of decline for Apple shares. Apple stock is down 5.7% since Monday’s close, just ahead of the company’s fiscal second-quarter results. Late Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple Watch production was slowed after a key component from one of two suppliers was found to be defective. The part involved is the taptic engine, which provides an electronic tap on the wrist for alerts. Reliability testing during production in February found that the component from one vendor started to break down over time. Apple Supplier Skyworks Earnings Hot, Guidance Strong

Apple (AAPL) iPhone chip supplier Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) late Thursday reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue late Thursday. Skyworks earned $1.15 a share excluding items in its second quarter, up 85.5% vs. a year earlier. Revenue climbed 58.4% to $762.1 million.
