Apple nixes TV, pursues virtual/augmented reality headsets: reports

B illionaire investor Carl Icahn might have to readjust his expectations for Apple (AAPL) now that it appears his hopes for an Apple-branded television set have been squashed. Just hours after Icahn posted a bullish note on Apple based on assumptions that Apple would enter the TV and electric car businesses, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple had shelved its plans for a television more than a year ago. After nearly a decade of research, Apple decided not to make a television set because it couldn’t offer enough breakthrough features to justify entering the highly competitive market, the WSJ said. Some Apple Watch developers neglected to use “shared containers” for their apps and have since switched to the technology. That has “significantly improved” app loading times, he said. Apple Watch apps will only get better when Apple releases a new software development kit at its Worldwide Developers Conference, which runs June 8-12 in San Francisco. That kit is expected to allow Apple Watch apps to be untethered from the iPhone and to directly access watch sensors, Chowdhry said. Chowdhry, a Silicon Valley provocateur, is…
