3 Chipmakers Bolting Higher As Industry Consolidates

The chipmaker group is showing strength amidst acquisition announcements, including Monday’s official Intel (INTC)-Altera (ALTR) deal. The newest pact comes just days after Apple (AAPL) supplier Avago Technologies (AVGO) agreed to buy peer Broadcom (BRCM). Another Apple supplier, NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), announced its merger with Freescale Semiconductor (FSL) in March. As the semiconductor industry consolidates, here’s a look at three chipmakers

Apple Watch software update, but no sales data, seen at WWDC

Apple (AAPL) is expected to update the software development kit for its Apple Watch next week at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference. But it’s not expected to quantify smartwatch sales to date, leaving analysts to shoot in the dark. Apple’s WWDC runs June 8-12 in San Francisco. Intel (INTC) on Monday will announce a deal to buy Altera (ALTR) for nearly $17 billion, or about $54 a share, according to multiple reports, with the aim of reinforcing its dominance in server chips. That continues a recent run of semiconductor M&A, following last week’s $37 billion deal by Apple (AAPL) supplier Avago Technologies (AVGO) for Broadcom (BRCM). Intel-Altera deal buzz has waxed and waned since the Wall Street Journal reported talks
