The number of smartphones with active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays has mushroomed this year as more handset makers chose the screen technology for slimmer, lighter devices. AMOLED displays made up 18% of all smartphone display unit shipments in the third quarter, up from 10% in Q3 2014, research firm IHS (IHS) reported Wednesday.
