Wireless chip maker Qualcomm (QCOM) on Friday announced that it had promoted Chief Operating Officer Steve Mollenkopf to be its next CEO, putting a damper on speculation that he would be the next CEO of Microsoft (MSFT). Qualcomm said current CEO Paul Jacobs will continue on as executive chairman. Jacobs, the son of Qualcomm co-founder and former CEO Irwin Jacobs, has headed the company since 2005.
