Head-up displays to expand beyond luxury cars

Heads up, tech trend watchers. Almost one-third of consumer vehicles shipping in 2024 will be equipped with some form of head-up display, ABI Research predicts. A head-up display (HUD) projects information onto a car’s windshield within a driver’s field of vision. The displays are thought to minimize driver distraction and thus improve safety. They can show such information as a car’s speed, fuel level and navigation instructions. HUD units already are in luxury cars from automakers like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. But falling prices for the technology will put head-up displays in more cars in the next 10 years, ABI analyst James Hodgson said in a statement. The main suppliers of HUDs include Bosch, Continental, Denso, NSK and Panasonic, ABI reported last week. Other players include Harman International Industries (HAR), Visteon (VC) and Delphi Automotive (DLPH).
