Apple acquisition could presage gesture-controlled TV

Apple’s (AAPL]) rumored acquisition of 3D sensor maker PrimeSense is raising speculation that the technology could be used as the control interface for an Apple television set. Based in Israel, PrimeSense is the company behind Microsoft’s (MSFT) original Kinect, the motion-control sensor used with the Xbox 360 video game console. The deal hasn’t been finalized but Apple is expected to pay $345 million for PrimeSense, AllThingsD reported. Rumors of a potential acquisition of PrimeSense by Apple date back to July. PrimeSense technology for 3D machine vision could be used in interactive living room and mobile devices. But much of the excitement around the possible deal revolves around the potential for PrimeSense technology being used in an Apple television set. With the technology, consumers would be able to control their TV set and navigate through on-screen menus using gestures, perhaps coupled with Siri voice-command services…
