Android tops iOS in phone ads, but Apple leads where it counts

Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system has overtaken Apple’s (AAPL) iOS in smartphone advertising traffic. But Apple gets the lion’s share of mobile phone ad revenue. Those are among the conclusions of a report released Tuesday by Opera Mediaworks of San Mateo, Calif. Android surpassed iOS in smartphone ad impressions in the fourth quarter, the mobile advertising company said in a press release. Android smartphones grabbed 35.9% of mobile ad traffic in Q4, compared with iPhone’s 28.7%, Opera Mediaworks said. But Apple leads where it counts: in ad revenue. The iPhone pulled in 40% of mobile ad revenue to 30.1% for Android smartphones. Apple still has a commanding lead in tablet advertising. Apple’s iPad accounted for 10.6% of mobile ad traffic and 12.7% of revenue. Android tablets made up 1.9% of mobile ad impressions and 1.7% of ad revenue.
