Google, Yahoo Must Scrub 16 Video Streamers: Reuters

Search engines Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO) and others reportedly have been ordered by a French court to scrub all search results that lead users to 16 websites where videos allegedly are being streamed illegally. A civil court in Paris handed down a Thursday ruling saying that the search engines, along with several Internet providers, should block the sites, according to Reuters. Yahoo hires Couric; Mayer reverts to media company strategy

With its hiring of big-name TV journalist Katie Couric, Yahoo (YHOO)  hopes to increase its online audience through original news content. Yahoo announced Monday that Couric is joining the company as global anchor for Yahoo News. Her hiring is “part of Yahoo’s ongoing commitment to re-imagine how news and information is delivered and consumed,” the company said in a press release . “Beginning in 2014, Katie will help develop Yahoo News’ coverage with a growing team of global correspondents who will report on live world events, anchor groundbreaking interviews with major newsmakers and thought leaders, and much more.” Couric will continue to host her syndicated daytime talk show, “Katie,” in addition to her new duties at Yahoo. Yahoo says it is “investing in top talent and leading industry voices,” citing recent hires of tech columnist David Pogue, Yahoo News editor in chief Megan Liberman, and national political columnist Matt Bai, all from the New York Times. Mystery bidder gobbles up Sandwich.com from Yahoo

Businesses were hungry for the domain name sandwich.com, which Yahoo sold Thursday for $137,500 to an unnamed bidder as part of its week-long Domainapalooza sale. Yahoo was auctioning off more than 100 website domain names, but most failed to reach their reserve prices and thus weren’t sold. Only 10 domain names were sold in the auction, Domain Name Wire reported . Sandwich.com had a reserve range of $50,000 to $99,999, but the winning bidder passed that threshold to gobble it up. No word at deadline who the new owner is. But I wouldn’t be surprised if his first name was Jared .
