Netflix 4K video streams may attract ‘hundreds’ of viewers

Subscription online video leader Netflix (NFLX) plans to support ultra high-definition 4K video in a big way in 2014. But with so few Ultra HD televisions in homes today, few people are going to be able to see it. Netflix (NFLX)  Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt told Stuff that it will stream the second season of its Emmy Award-winning political drama “House of Cards” in 4K video. The acclaimed show stars Kevin Spacey and premieres on Feb. 14. Hunt acknowledged there will be little 4K video available at first, but the company wants to lead the transition. “The trick here is that since it’s going to take awhile until there is a material catalog in 4K, it’s important for us to get out front and begin to push it,” Hunt said. “We’re one of the few folks working all the way through from soup to nuts — we’ve got the original content production on one end, and we’re working closely with the CE manufacturers on the other end, and we’ve got the whole delivery pipeline in between. So I think we can be instrumental in beginning the shift of production toward 4K.” Netflix’s main streaming rival Amazon.com (AMZN) said Monday that it plans to shoot all of its original series, including comedies and dramas, next year in 4K Ultra HD.

Why Netflix cut exclusive deal for ‘Breaking Bad’ spinoff show

When AMC Networks (AMCX) announced that it would make a spinoff show from its hit series “Breaking Bad,” it was a no-brainer that Netflix (NFLX) would step up and cut an exclusive deal for the streaming video rights.  Netflix has invested in a lot of exclusive content, including original shows, but nothing has been as successful as the drug-crime drama “Breaking Bad.” The NPD Group reported Monday that “Breaking Bad” was the No. 1 TV show streamed on subscription online video services from January through October this year. “Breaking Bad” is available exclusively for streaming on Netflix. The CBS (CBS) comedy “How I Met Your Mother” was second, followed by AMC’s zombie apocalypse series “The Walking Dead.” Netflix announced Monday that it would be the exclusive subscription TV service for “Breaking Bad” spinoff series, “Better Call Saul,” in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Latin America, all of its current markets…

Let them eat cake and watch Jerry Lewis movies

Netflix (NFLX) wants to launch its streaming-video service in France, Europe’s third-largest market. Here’s hoping they have enough videos featuring French favorite Jerry Lewis to satisfy demand. Netflix executives on Tuesday met with the staff of French President Francois Hollande to discuss the possibility of offering the company’s over-the-top Internet video service in the country, Reuters reported Wednesday. Netflix also has talked with th officials in Germany and other European countries about starting service there, Reuters said. Netflix currently offers service in 41 countries, including the U.K., the Netherlands and the Nordic nations. In an Oct. 21 letter to shareholders, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells said the company planned to launch in new markets in 2014, but they didn’t specify where. “Our success this year in increasing international net (subscriber) additions to nearly the level of our domestic net additions shows substantial momentum and confirms…
