Bing celebrates 5th anniversary with Apple gains

Microsoft’s Bing search engine celebrated its fifth anniversary on Tuesday, a day after it made big gains against rival Google on Apple’s software platforms. Microsoft (MSFT) launched Bing on June 3, 2009, with the mission of offering better Internet search results than search engine leader Google (GOOGL). To celebrate the 5-year milestone, Microsoft offered up a gallery of some of its most popular and notable Bing home pages. The Bing home page is known for presenting large, beautiful photos of landscapes and nature with interesting facts about them. “People consistently tell us how much they enjoy the rich imagery on our homepage,” the Bing team said in a blog post.  On Monday, Apple (AAPL) executives showed how they have integrated Bing into the new Mac OS X release called Yosemite. Apple revealed that it has dropped Google in favor of Bing for its desktop search app called Spotlight, Search Engine…

ARM, Intel invading each other’s chip markets

While Intel is making moves in the tablet market where ARM Holdings reigns, ARM is poised to take away business from Intel in the PC market. Intel (INTC) on Tuesday announced a strategic agreement with China-based Rockchip to bring Intel technology to entry-level tablets based on Google’s (GOOGL) Android operating system. Intel (INTC) and Rockchip will deliver an Intel-branded mobile system-on-a-chip platform next year. The quad-core platform will be based on an Intel Atom processor core integrated with Intel’s 3G modem technology. It is expected to be available in the first half of 2015. Based in Fuzhou, China, Rockchip is a fabless semiconductor company that designs chips for mobile Internet terminals, including tablets, and multimedia entertainment devices, such as set-top boxes and portable media players. Intel hopes to leverage Rockchip’s ability to quickly launch inexpensive mobile chips as well as the company’s strong relationships with Chinese manufacturers, Reuters reported…

Apple home-automation plan already has skeptics

Apple’s keynote presentation at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco next Monday is likely to focus on its new mobile operating system, iOS 8, and on using the iPhone as a remote control for lights, security systems and other home electronics. Apple ‘s (AAPL) keynote will be its first public product presentation in the seven months since the Oct. 22 launch of the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display. Apple is typically mum on what it plans to reveal. But most analysts say that the talk will center on new versions of its core operating systems: iOS 8 for mobile devices and a second California-themed OS X operating system for its Mac computers, following last year’s Mavericks. The Financial Times reported Monday that Apple is going to push a new software platform that would turn the iPhone into a remote control for lights, security systems and other household appliances as part of a move into the “Internet of Things.” It would follow similar moves by Google (GOOGL) and Samsung in the area of home automation.
