Apple confirms PrimeSense acquisition; Plans unknown

Apple (AAPL) has confirmed its acquisition of PrimeSense, a developer of 3D machine vision technology, but what it plans to do with it remains a mystery. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” Apple (AAPL) spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in a statement to AllThingsD. Israel-based PrimeSense is best known for providing the technology used in the Kinect sensor for Microsoft ‘s (MSFT) Xbox 360 video game console. That product uses cameras and depth sensors to capture players’ movements and incorporate them into the gameplay. Microsoft reportedly is using homegrown technology for the newest version of Kinect for its just-released Xbox One console. PrimeSense has advanced beyond the large table-top Kinect sensor to create smaller 3D sensors that can work in mobile devices.
