Cisco Systems Grabs More Security Appliance Business

Sales of network security appliances continued to sizzle in the third quarter, up 10% year over year to nearly $2.4 billion worldwide. It was the 20th consecutive quarter of growth for the market, research firm IDC said in a report Monday. Top vendor Cisco Systems (CSCO) expanded its lead to 18.7% market share, up from 15.9% a year earlier. In a letter, 60 technology companies on Wednesday again urged the Federal Communications Commission not to impose public utility-type regulation on high-speed Internet services, amid growing signs that FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler will go along with President Obama’s call for Title II reclassification. You’ve heard of the cloud. Now brace yourself for “the fog”! First came cloud computing, where people access computer resources, software applications and data — stored in remote server farms — over the Internet. Now tech industry insiders have coined the term “fog computing” to address the “Internet of Things,” a dispersed network of sensors and smart devices. “Fog computing could be the next evolution of cloud computing,” UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said in a report Thursday. “Currently, the pendulum is swinging toward centralized cloud computing. However, the next big trend looks like the Internet of Things, which may require a decentralized infrastructure based on edge or fog computing.” Milunovich says that Cisco Systems (CSCO) defines fog computing as “a highly virtualized platform, typically located at the network’s edge, that provides computer, storage and networking services between end devices and traditional cloud computing data centers.” The Internet of Things promises to bring…
