Apple promotes Jony Ive to chief design officer

Apple (AAPL) Senior Vice President of Design Jony Ive has long been referred to as the company’s design chief, but now the London-born executive is getting the official title of chief design officer, a newly created position. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the move in an employee memo on Monday, 9to5Mac reported . Additionally, Ive will be handing over “day-to-day managerial responsibilities” for the industrial design and user interface design units to two other executives on July 1. Richard Howarth will become vice president of industrial design and focus on hardware. Alan Dye will become vice president of user interface design, which covers desktop and mobile device software.
