Activision boosted by ‘Destiny,’ digital game sales

It was “Destiny” that Activision Blizzard would beat Wall Street’s third-quarter earnings target. Now its “Call of Duty” is to do the same this quarter. The video game publisher got a big assist from the successful launch of “Destiny,” its new science-fiction shooter franchise, released on Sept. 9. Activision (ATVI) said late Tuesday that it had earned 23 cents a share excluding items in Q3, up from 8 cents in the year-earlier quarter and topping the consensus estimate of 13 cents among analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. Adjusted sales rose 78% to $1.17 billion, beating the $1.01 billion forecast by Wall Street. ‘League of Legends’ trumps ‘Warcraft’ in PC game play

Multiplayer online video game “League of Legends” from Riot Games, a subsidiary of Tencent Holdings (TCEHY), is trouncing Activision’s “World of Warcraft” in terms of hours played per game, according to a new report. “Legends” accounted for 20.6% of PC gaming play time in August, vs. 7.6% for Activision’s (ATVI) “Warcraft,” based on activity among members of Raptr, an online gaming platform and community. “Legends” and “Warcraft” were the Nos. 1 and 2 most played PC games last month, respectively, Raptr said Tuesday. E-sports tournament play gave “League of Legends” a big boost in August, Raptr said. In July, the game accounted for 17.7% of PC game play. “League of Legends” is a free-to-play game supported by micro-transactions.
