Apple home-automation plan already has skeptics

Apple’s keynote presentation at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco next Monday is likely to focus on its new mobile operating system, iOS 8, and on using the iPhone as a remote control for lights, security systems and other home electronics. Apple ‘s (AAPL) keynote will be its first public product presentation in the seven months since the Oct. 22 launch of the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display. Apple is typically mum on what it plans to reveal. But most analysts say that the talk will center on new versions of its core operating systems: iOS 8 for mobile devices and a second California-themed OS X operating system for its Mac computers, following last year’s Mavericks. The Financial Times reported Monday that Apple is going to push a new software platform that would turn the iPhone into a remote control for lights, security systems and other household appliances as part of a move into the “Internet of Things.” It would follow similar moves by Google (GOOGL) and Samsung in the area of home automation.

Amazon offers 30-day free trials of Fire TV set-top box

Amazon.com hopes to light a fire under sales of its Fire TV set-top box by giving select customers a 30-day free trial of the device. BTIG Research and several media outlets reported Friday that Amazon.com is emailing certain customers with an offer to try out the Fire TV streaming video box for a month at no charge. The promotion comes less than two months after Amazon launched the box to compete with devices from Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOGL), Roku and others. “It’s an unusual promotion for Amazon (AMZN) , which previously has never allowed customers to try a product at home before buying it,” Kif Leswing wrote on GigaOm. If trial customers like the $99 Fire TV, Amazon will bill them after the 30-day window. If they don’t, they can simply return it within that time. Fire TV ranks No. 1 on Amazon’s Top 100 Electronics , up from No. 3 earlier in the day. Google Chromecast is No. 2, the Roku 3 box is No. 6 and Apple TV is No. 11 as of this posting.

Apple Institutional Ownership Low Ahead Of iPhone 6

Apple’s (AAPL) institutional ownership was low amid a recent rotation into value tech stocks and out of hyper-growth tech stocks, says Morgan Stanley, which sees upside ahead for Apple stock from upcoming launches of the iPhone 6, iWatch and perhaps other products. Apple, however, has an IBD accumulation/distribution rating of B, indicating more institutional buying than selling. In a research report Friday, Morgan Stanley said it surveyed
