Apple makes new iPads, sees fitness band as medical

Apple’s fall product lineup hasn’t been unveiled yet, but fresh media reports signal next-generation iPads already in production and a fitness band being positioned as a medical device. Apple’s (AAPL) contract manufacturers have started making new iPads for release this fall, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. The new tablets will have the same display sizes as the current models, the news outlet said. They include a fifth-generation full-size iPad with a 9.7-inch display and a third-generation iPad Mini with a 7.9-inch display. The iPad is Apple’s (AAPL)  second-biggest product after the iPhone, but sales have declined for two straight quarters. In the June quarter, iPad sales dipped 9% year over year to 13.3 million units. The drop followed a 16% decline in the March quarter. Analysts have expressed concerns that the tablet market might be saturated and that consumers are holding on to iPads much longer between upgrades than they hold onto smartphones….

Apple might fix biggest iPhone flaw with new handset

Apple (AAPL) has heard iPhone users’ gripes about poor battery life and decided to do something about it with the upcoming iPhone 6. The 4.7-inch model of the iPhone 6 could ship with a 2,100 mAh (milliampere hour) capacity battery, rather than the 1,810 mAh battery previously speculated for the handset, ESM-China analyst Sung Chang Xu said on Weibo this week. She said her statement was based on supply-chain sources. The current iPhone 5S has a 1,560 mAh battery. The report was picked up by CNET and other tech news websites. However, given that the new iPhone will have a bigger display and faster components than its predecessor, the larger battery might not translate into longer battery life. The current iPhone 5 series has a 4-inch display. A second version of the iPhone 6 is expected to have a 5.5-inch screen. Rival smartphones already sport bigger batteries. …
