Apple Pay catching on fast, poses threat to PayPal

Apple Pay is off to a fast start, grabbing 1.7% of mobile payment transactions in November, its first full month of operation, ITG Investment Research reported Friday. Just six weeks after its launch, Apple’s (AAPL) e-wallet service is shaping up as a serious threat to market leader PayPal. PayPal, a unit of eBay (EBAY), was the top mobile payment company in terms of dollars spent last month, with 78% market share. But that’s down from 80% in the same month last year, ITG said. Square was second, with 18% market share, up from 15%. Google’s (GOOGL) Google Wallet was third with 4%, but that’s after three years on the market. A year ago, Google Wallet had 5% market share. Apple No. 1 brand in wearables, only it doesn’t have one yet

Apple (AAPL) doesn’t even have a wearable computing device on the market, but already it’s by far the top brand in the young category. In a recent poll by Ipsos, U.S. adults were asked which brands they would consider purchasing in the wearables category. Apple was tops with 62%, followed by Google (GOOGL) (44%) and Samsung (43%). Google makes the Android Wear operating system for smartwatches and has Google Glass headsets in limited release. Samsung makes smartwatches and fitness bands. But Apple has yet to enter the wearables market. It announced the Apple Watch on Sept. 9, but it won’t be available until “early 2015.” Recent speculation has put the release in March or April. Top fitness-band maker Fitbit was fourth among brands of wearables that consumers would consider buying. It was selected by 31% of respondents.
