Apple (AAPL) is leading by example with environmental initiatives in China. The Cupertino, Calif.-based consumer electronics giant on Monday announced an expansion of its renewable energy and environmental protection efforts in China. Those efforts include a new multiyear project with the World Wildlife Fund that it says will significantly increase responsibly managed forests across China. Apple’s new forestland program aims to protect as much as 1 million acres of responsibly managed working forests, which provide fiber for pulp, paper and wood products. Apple said its goal is to achieve a “net-zero impact” on the world’s supply of sustainable virgin fiber and power all of its operations worldwide on 100% renewable energy. Today, 87% of Apple’s global operations run on renewable energy, the company says. Apple also announced plans to expand its renewable energy projects to manufacturing facilities in China. Apple’s (AAPL) smartwatch has been on sale for two weeks, but it remains a hot topic among analysts, journalists … and comedians. Late-night comic Conan O’Brien, host of the TBS talk show “Conan,” has been having fun joking about the Apple Watch. This week, after reports surfaced that wrist tattoos could interfere with the sensors on the watch, O’Brien did a funny video showing how Apple had solved the problem. Last month, O’Brien’s sidekick Andy Richter demonstrated his new Apple Watch on air, but had trouble getting it to tell the time. Before that, “Conan” aired a funny video called “Introducing Apple Pocketwatch” Satirical news website The Onion asked people on the street about the Apple Watch’s tattoo glitch. “If only there were another way for those users to have their music, contacts, and favorite apps all in one place,” one schlub replies.
