Consumers have big appetite for Apple Car

A survey of consumers who own hybrid or electric vehicles found that more than three quarters would be likely to buy a car manufactured by Apple (AAPL). Market research and consulting firm Morpace polled more than 250 U.S. owners of hybrid or electric cars for its study. It asked them about their interest in a car that Apple is rumored to be developing for release by 2020. The results showed that 9% are “extremely likely” to buy the Apple car, with 25% “very likely” and 43% “somewhat likely” to purchase it. The rest are “not very likely” to purchase the Apple Car (13%) or “not at all likely” to buy it, Morpace said. Rumored big-screen iPad could get Force Touch display

Rumors of a big-screen iPad perked up this week with a report that Apple (AAPL)  hopes to use a new type of touch panel for the jumbo-size tablet. Citing unnamed sources in the supply chain, Korea IT News reported Monday that Apple has requested silver nanowire display samples from LG Display (LPL), Samsung Display and others for the so-called iPad Pro tablet, AppleInsider reported Monday. The silver nanowire touch display would be more flexible than current displays and could enable the deployment of Force Touch technology. Apple uses Force Touch in the Apple Watch to distinguish between different touches like a tap and a press. Apple is rumored to be looking to add Force Touch to its next smartphone, the iPhone 6S, this fall.

Garmin follows Apple with heart-rate sensor on watch

Garmin (GRMN) on Tuesday introduced its first GPS running watch that measures heart rate at the wrist. The product comes roughly two weeks after Apple (AAPL) launched its Apple Watch, which also features a heart-rate sensor. Previous Garmin sports watches linked to a $50 chest-worn heart-rate monitor. Garmin’s Forerunner 225 watch uses an optical heart-rate sensor from Mio Global of Vancouver, British Columbia. It also has built-in activity-tracking features. The Forerunner 225 costs $300 and will start shipping this quarter. “Garmin management’s historical rhetoric has been that wrist-based optical heart rate monitors are much less accurate than a strap worn around the chest,” Dougherty analyst Charles Anderson said in a report Tuesday. “We believe Garmin has recognized that consumers want a wrist-worn heart rate monitor, which has been offered by the likes of Fitbit, Apple, Samsung and TomTom on fitness (bands) and smartwatches.” The Forerunner 225 is the fourth new…
