GoPro looking to own the skies with its own drones

Tired of hitching a ride on other companies’ remote-controlled drones, action camera maker GoPro (GPRO) reportedly is looking to make its own consumer drones. GoPro stock jumped nearly 6% to 79.05 on Wednesday after the Wall Street Journal published a report saying that GoPro is developing a line of multi-rotor miniature helicopters to ferry its high-definition cameras. GoPro hopes to start selling the drones late next year for $500 to $1,000, the Journal said. Such remote-controlled aircraft are popular with hobbyists and videographers for capturing dramatic images of the great outdoors, man-made structures, newsworthy events or themselves from up high. Many popular drones on the market, such as those from DJI and Parrot, are designed to carry cameras such as GoPro’s (GPRO) Hero image-capture devices, which weigh about 3 ounces.
